P&G Recalls Some Iams, Eukanuba Dry Pet Foods Because of Potential for Salmonella

pah_c_hairball_lg_1According to Pet Product News International, Proctor & Gamble, manufacturers of Iams and Eukanuba brand cat and dog foods are recalling certain lots of their dry foods due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet foods, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surface exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

All of the recalled food has Nov. 2014 best buy dates on the bags.

Eukanuba dry dog foods subject to recall: Base Large Breed Mature Adult, Base Maintenance Mature Adult, Base Small Breed Adult, Base Small Breed Puppy, Breed Specific Boxer Adult, Breed Specific Chihuahua Adult, Breed Specific Labrador Retriever Adult, Premium Performance 30/20 Adult, Professional Feeding Bag Small Breed Puppy, Weight Control Large Breed Adult.

Iams dry dog foods being recalled: Healthy Naturals Chicken Adult, Healthy Naturals Weight Control Adult, Premium Protection Chicken Adult, ProActive Health Large Breed Mature Adult, ProActive Health Large Breed Senior Plus, ProActive Health Large Chunks Adult, ProActive Health Small Breed Adult, ProActive Health Small Breed Puppy.

Iams dry cat foods subject to the recall are Healthy Naturals Chicken Adult, Healthy Naturals Weight Control Adult, ProActive Health Chicken Adult, ProActive Health Chicken Kitten, ProActive Health Digestive Care Adult, ProActive Health Hairball Adult, ProActive Health Hairball Mature Adult, ProActive Health Weight Control & Hairball Adult, ProActive Health Weight Control Adult, Professional Feeding Bag Chicken Adult.

No other dry dog food, dry cat food, dog or cat canned wet food, biscuits or treats or supplements are affected.

P&G is recalling these products as a precautionary measure. No salmonella-related illnesses have been reported to date in association with these product lots.

Consumers who purchased some of the recalled product should stop using it and discard it and contact P&G at 800-208-0172 Monday thorough Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (ET), or at Iams.com or at Eukanuba.com.
