Weigh In: How Far Would You Go to Support a Ban on Declawing?

Public outcry against cat declawing is getting louder and louder these days. Even as anti-declawing advocacy groups like The Paw Project steadily grow in numbers, the fight against declawing struggles on.

To be clear, this site is a strong advocate against declawing. It’s a painful amputation of a cat’s knuckles – not simply removing claws, as many people still believe. It’s a procedure that’s extremely painful, and can have lasting, even lifelong, emotional and physical effects on a cat, who’s very nature is to use his claws.

That said, many people for many years have had their pets declawed – on the advice of their trusted veterinarian, possibly as an add-on when the cat was spayed or neutered. If the vet recommended it, how could it possibly be a bad thing?

The Veterinarian’s Oath says:

Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.

Wouldn’t declawing a cat – and potentially causing a lifetime of pain and suffering – be a direct violation of the very oath every vet has made since 1954?

That got us thinking. Let’s discuss…

Would you have your cat declawed? Or, if you did in the past, would you do it again? Tell us your experience.

Does your veterinarian perform cat declaws? Perhaps it never ocurred to you to ask, because you’d never have your own cat declawed.

But, how do you feel about taking your cat to a veterinarian who is willing to declaw cats?

We’re curious to know what you think. Comment below.
