Originally known as the Archangel Cat, the Russian Blue is believed to have its roots from the outer borders of the Arctic Circle in the northern parts of Russia. The cat is a natural breed presumed to have been taken along to England and to Northern Europe as trading goods by merchants and sailors sometime in the middle of 1800s. Legend has it that these distinct felines have descended from the Royal Cats of the Russian Czars, and that they were among the favorites of England’s celebrated monarch, Queen Victoria.
Russian Blue cats are a lean, medium-sized breed with a short but dense and lush double-coat with a seal-like texture. Its color has to be a solid bluish-grey with a well-defined silvery sheen coming from the dilute manifestation of the black gene. Ideally, the Russian Blue cat will have no trace of white or tabby markings. The breed’s superior coat color as well as texture is the single most significant feature prized mainly in the show ring. Also, the Russian Blue cats have a wedge-shaped head, short muzzle, bright emerald green and round to almond-shaped eyes, widely-set pointed ears, and prominent whisker pads.
Temperament
Russian Blues generally make quiet and gentle household pets. They are sensitive, affectionate and kind companions who, for the most part, are in-tune with their owner’s feelings. Russian Blue cats are very loving, exceptionally devoted and loyal. In fact, they develop strong, close bonds with their human friends. Not to mention their ability to get along well with children and other pets at home. However, Russian Blues can be rather shy around strangers and can be even quite aggressive or especially withdrawn. Also, the breed is known to be intelligent, active and energetic. They love to open doors and windows, play fetch, and bat around various toys and objects, clearly for the sheer pleasure and amusement of it. Nevertheless, the Russian Blue is not the kind that requires a huge amount of exercise or physical stimulation as it tends to easily adjust its activity level based on the emotional mood and needs of its beloved household.
Grooming
Despite the Russian Blue’s thick coat, it is still considered to be among those breeds which are rather easy to groom. As a matter of fact, brushing and combing their fur once or twice weekly can already be good enough to maintain the good condition of its stunning blue coat. The rest is basic care.
Health Concerns
Russian Blue cats are generally healthy. In fact, the only health issue reportedly linked to this breed is bladder stone problems.
Best Environment
Russian Blues normally thrive well in almost any living environment. However, to make sure that your adorable blue pet lives a happy and healthy life, you have to safeguard him from the usual perils found outside your home. These include car accidents, diseases spread by cats, and possible attacks from other animals.
