7 Reasons You Need to Take Your Cat to the ER Vet, ASAP

Cats are known for being independent and self-sufficient creatures. While this may be true for the most part, there are some instances when cats require our help. If you notice your cat exhibiting any of the following signs, it is imperative that you take them to the ER as soon as possible. Failure to do so could result in serious health complications for your feline friend. Some things can wait for your regular vet, but some emergencies call for a trip to the emergency clinic as soon as possible. Here are 7 reasons you should take your cat to the ER vet, ASAP:

1. Your cat is bleeding and it won’t stop

If your cat is bleeding and the bleeding won’t stop, this is a sign of a serious emergency. If you notice your cat bleeding, apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth and immediately take them to the ER.

2. Your cat is having difficulty breathing

If your cat is having difficulty breathing, this is a sign of a possible obstruction in their airway. It could also be a sign of a serious respiratory infection, heart disease, or fluid in the lungs. If you notice your cat struggling to breathe, open mouth breathing, or breathing very fast for a long period of time, take them to the ER immediately. A cat’s normal respiratory rate at rest should be between 20 and 30 breaths per minute.

3. Your cat is having seizures

If your cat is experiencing seizures, this could be a sign of a serious neurological condition. Seizures can also be caused by low blood sugar, liver disease, or kidney disease. If your cat is having seizures, take them to the emergency vet immediately.

4. Your cat is paralyzed

If your cat is suddenly paralyzed, this could be a sign of a spinal cord injury, thromboembolism, or another disease. It could also be caused by an infection or toxin. If you notice your cat cannot move their legs or is dragging their back legs, take them to the ER immediately.

5. Your cat is vomiting or has diarrhea that won’t stop

If your cat is vomiting or has diarrhea that won’t stop, this could be a sign of a serious gastrointestinal problem. It could also be a sign of poisoning. If your cat is vomiting or has diarrhea for more than 24 hours, take them to the ER.

6. Your cat is in pain and won’t stop crying

If your cat is in pain and cries out when you touch them, this is a sign that they are in serious pain and need medical attention. Pain can be caused by many things, including injuries, infections, or diseases. If your cat is in pain, take them to the ER immediately.

7. If you see your cat ingesting something poisonous

If you see your cat ingesting something poisonous, such as a plant or chemical, take them to the ER immediately. Even if they only ingest a small amount, it could still be poisonous and dangerous to their health. For example, simply smelling some types of lilies is enough to send a cat into kidney failure, and could result in death if not treated quickly enough.

The bottom line is, if you think your cat is experiencing a medical emergency, don’t hesitate to take them to the ER vet if your regular veterinarian is not available. Time is of the essence when it comes to your cat’s health, and the sooner you get them treatment, the better.
